About the Train

What is the Narita Express (N'EX) train?

The Narita Express — universally known as N'EX — is a limited express service operated by JR East (East Japan Railway Company) that has connected Narita International Airport to central Tokyo since 19 March 1991. All services run on E259 series rolling stock, passing through Tokyo Station where trains are coupled or split to reach Shinjuku and Yokohama simultaneously, without passengers needing to change carriages. Every seat on every service is reserved.

The E259 series fleet, which has exclusively operated the N'EX since June 2010, received a refreshed livery between 2023 and March 2024, with all 22 six-car sets now wearing an updated black and red colour scheme with new silver accents. Services run every 30 minutes during peak hours, with the first departure from Narita Airport at 07:37 and the last at 21:44.

Dial-Locked Luggage Bays

Each carriage features dedicated luggage storage near the doors with dial-type combination locks — a feature unique to N'EX within the JR East network, designed specifically for travellers arriving with large international suitcases. Security cameras monitor these areas.

Three Terminal Access

N'EX stops at Narita Airport Terminal 1 and Terminal 2·3 directly by rail. Passengers arriving at Terminal 3 can reach Terminal 2·3 Station via the covered walkway connecting the two terminals.

Japan Rail Pass Compatible

JR Pass holders travel on all N'EX services at no additional fare — including no limit on the number of journeys. A seat reservation is still required and must be collected free of charge from a JR Ticket Office before boarding.
